VERIZON TO 'PARTNER' WITH MARYLAND TELECOM PIONEERS TO HELP CRITICALLY ILL CHILDREN

Critically ill, traumatized and abused children in medical facilities throughout Maryland and Washington DC can receive the gift of Courage through a new communication tool….Duffy the Lion. Everyday thousands of critically ill children experience fear. Genuine fears…fears resulting from their illness, treatment or separation from their family or friends. Imagine the fear a small child experiences waking up in ICU or going through many months of painful but necessary treatments. Because these children must possess extraordinary courage, they will be given a lion to accompany them on their journey. With the ‘heart of a lion’ and the creative features of their new friend, children will be able to better express their fears and concerns. As an example, the lion has longer front legs so a child can place the paws over the eyes of the lion if the message they are being told makes them fearful. The paws can be used to point to the areas of the child’s body that is in pain while the ‘courage pocket’ (built-in the lion) can be used to hold written lists of fears or concerns or hold lists of the child’s accomplishments.

Although only a few months old, this program expands with sponsorships from caring individuals like yourself. The Courage Lion program has already gifted over 9000 lions to Johns Hopkins Children Center, University of Maryland Hospital for Children, Kennedy-Krieger Institute, Sinai Hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center, Children’s National Medical Center, Medevac Helicopters, Air National Guard and Maryland National Guard (children of wounded or fallen soldiers).

Your tax-deductible sponsorship will entitle a child to receive:
• Duffy the Lion either the smaller lion for children under 3 years of age ($15) or the larger lion ($25)
• Courage Pockets 32 page illustrated story of Duffy’s journey
• Courage Pockets – a gift from the heart “Audio Book” of Courage Pockets plus a variety of encouraging songs because 60% of the children are not be able to read because of their young age or developmental disability.
